British Hen Welfare Trust

A Journey Fit for a Queen (Hen)

At Lulu Guinness, we are always seeking to combine creativity with meaningful causes. So, when the British Hen Welfare Trust approached us with an opportunity to mark a truly remarkable milestone, we knew we had to create something special. The Trust was about to rehome their One Millionth Hen—a significant achievement in their mission to rehome ex-commercial hens as pets.

This lucky hen, affectionately named Henrietta by His Majesty The King, was set to begin a new chapter at the royal residence of Highgrove Gardens. To honour this momentous occasion, our team was tasked with crafting a bespoke carrier that would ensure Henrietta's journey to her new home was nothing short of royal.

Crafting Henrietta's Bespoke Carrier

The project quickly became a labour of love at Lulu Guinness. Our team set to work designing and handcrafting a one-of-a-kind carrier that would reflect both the elegance of the Lulu Guinness brand and the significance of Henrietta’s journey. The carrier, which we named "Hengrove" was meticulously crafted in-house, with every detail carefully considered to ensure Henrietta’s comfort and safety.

Lulu herself worked tirelessly on the design, hand-painting intricate greenery patterns inspired by the facade of Highgrove—the very place where Henrietta would soon roam. The carrier was further embellished with delicate embroidery, one of Lulu’s signature touches, featuring banners that proudly declared "One Millionth Hen" alongside the British Hen Welfare Trust’s logo. The result was a house fit for a queen (hen), blending elegance, whimsy, and practicality in perfect harmony.

At Lulu Guinness, we believe that creativity knows no bounds. Whether it’s a chic handbag or a bespoke carrier for a beloved pet, our team can bring any vision to life. Henrietta’s journey in her custom-designed carrier is a testament to our dedication to craft, innovation, and the love we pour into everything we create.

A New Home at Highgrove Gardens

Henrietta’s rehoming to Highgrove Gardens is a testament to the extraordinary work done by the British Hen Welfare Trust. For years, the Trust has been dedicated to saving ex-commercial laying hens from slaughter, rehoming them as pets and providing them with a second chance at life after their time working on the farm. Their mission is simple yet profound: to give these hens a loving and caring home where they can live out their retirement in comfort and happiness.

With the help of over 1,400 volunteers and 48 rehoming sites across the UK, the British Hen Welfare Trust rehomes over 60,000 hens each year. Their work not only saves the lives of these hens but also brings joy and companionship to the families who adopt them. Henrietta, the millionth hen rehomed by the Trust, represents the culmination of these efforts—a symbol of hope, compassion, and the difference that can be made when people come together for a common cause.

Honoured to Support a Worthy Cause

At Lulu Guinness, we are incredibly proud to have played a role in giving Henrietta the best possible journey to her new home. This project allowed us to channel our creativity into something truly meaningful, and we are honoured to support the British Hen Welfare Trust in their mission.

Henrietta’s story is a beautiful reminder of the power of love, creativity and the positive impact we can have on the world around us.

As Henrietta settles into her new home at Highgrove Gardens, we hope her story inspires others to support the British Hen Welfare Trust and the important work they do. Whether it’s adopting a hen, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference.
